Radical Rabbit Stew – Old School Puzzle Platformer

*Radical Rabbit Stew developed by Pugstorm, published by Sold Out – July 16, 2020 (Xbox One, PS4, Switch, PC)
*MSRP: $15.99 (Steam) – https://store.steampowered.com/app/1232010/Radical_Rabbit_Stew/

Radical Rabbit Stew is a charming puzzle platformer evoking an old school vibe through the graphics and sound effects. You play the role of the cleaning boy working in the Legendary Space Diner, whose chefs have been kidnapped by the dastardly Rabbit Queen. The main goal of the game is to rescue your imprisoned friends by knocking the minions of the Rabbit Queen back into stew pots with a giant spoon.

The Silver Spoon lets you knock yourself into spring pads and move heavier enemies.

The game play sounds simple but the game adds in new mechanics over time through new spoons and level designs. You obtain items such as a silver spoon that gives you the ability to bounce yourself off of spring pads, and a slingshot to travel across gaps as well as grab enemies from afar.

Levels introduce new mechanics such as switches that block off areas until pressed.

As you progress in the game, you encounter new mechanics that act as obstacles to moving the enemy rabbits into the stew pots. The obstacles can range from switch pads that need to be activated, to bombs that explode on a timer.

There are collectable coins in most levels and some are incredibly well hidden.

In addition to the main goal of knocking enemies into the pots, you also have collectable blue coins. Some are harder to get as it requires you to explore the levels and sometimes find hidden paths. The collectables add in an incentive to replay levels for completionists.

The game is lighthearted enough to not take itself seriously.

Overall, Radical Rabbit Stew is a charming puzzle platformer. The game looks colorful, the sound track is great, and the game is lighthearted and has a sense of humor. It controls well, and I played primarily on keyboard, which usually does not handle platformers very well. The game evokes older titles such as The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros through text and sound effects. Fans of platformers and puzzle games alike have another solid title to look forward to.
