SpongeBob SquarePants Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is an action platformer that hearkens back to the golden era of games such as Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. The game features the kooky but lovable cast of the SpongeBob television show as they go about their usually unusual lives.

The game features all the classic traits of a good platformer: large, open worlds to explore, secret side areas, many collectables, and memorable boss fights.

Patrick can throw many things, including enemies.

The game lets you control one of three characters, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy. Each character has their own set of unique abilities that are needed to explore certain areas of each world and you can freely switch between characters at bus stops located through out the map. Sandy is my personal favorite as she can glide for long distances, can use a Karate chop and kick, and can lasso enemies from long range. Sandy is the best.

Every character has some abilities that let them access more areas of the map, like Patrick’s ability to throw Freezy Fruits.

The core mechanics are very simple and intuitive like most platformers. SpongeBob Rehydrated adds in some variety to the core game play loop by letting players unlock special abilities, such as SpongeBob’s bubble bowling ability, to access hidden areas of the map.

The game does get more challenging and also has some very colorful and memorable boss fights.

The game starts of pretty easy and then slowly ramps up the difficulty and some areas of the game can be pretty challenging. The good news is that dying in the game is not punishing at all. You don’t lose any of items you’ve collected and simply restart at the last check point.

SpongeBob being SpongeBob.

Overall SpongeBob Rehydrated is a very competent, lighthearted, and enjoyable game that respects the roots of both platformers and the show . The game also features a lot of inside references to the television show sprinkled throughout the game so fans will have a lot to look forward to.
