Undermine is a straight forward rogue lite where you take the role of a hapless peasant who is going into the mines in order to do the bidding of a rather rude wizard. Your main objective is to make it to the bottom of the mines and find out what is causing the troublesome earth quakes.
As it is with most rogue lites, the game will be quite difficult to finish on your first run but fear not, you will be able to take your hard earned gold and use it to purchase passive upgrades to make your spelunking adventures much easier the next time around.
You can upgrade things such as your pickaxe damage, maximum health, throw damage, and throw range. You can also find and purchase blueprints will can be forged using a special material to help you create special equipment specific for that run.
The main game play loop is straight forward and enjoyable. The boss fights are not too difficult and you can memorize their attack patterns and adjust to them fairly easily. In addition to the core game, there are many secrets and side quests as well. For example, one character tasks you with finding special mushrooms scattered throughout the mines.
Overall, Undermine is a very competent rogue lite and it does a great job on making it feel like you are making enough progress on each run. It’s never too frustrating but the later levels certainly do get way more difficult and provide a challenge. The overall presentation is great as well, with solid artwork and sound design. Fans of rogue lites have another solid title to look forward to. There’s only one question that needs answering, the Undermine is under where?
