Frostpunk On the Edge DLC Overview and Gameplay

*Frostpunk On the Edge developed and published by 11 Bit Studios – August 20, 2020 (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

On the Edge revisits the macabre world of Frostpunk but brings some new mechanics and an entirely new scenario to the table. The main difference in this DLC is that you rely on trading with other settlements for sorely needed resources. You are basically a colony of New London and let’s just say New London is filled with jerks and they’re keen on lording it over you since they have food and you don’t.

I think we can all agree New London sucks.

In true Frostpunk fashion, things get ugly pretty quickly and you are forced between choosing to kowtow to New London’s increasingly harsh demands so you can maintain a steady supply of food, or giving them the bird and choosing to make it on your own by building relationships with other smaller settlements.

Let’s just say it’s going to be a harsh winter without a generator.

There’s also another catch. Since you are a new settlement, you do not have a generator built so surviving the harsh winters can get quite difficult. On the Edge manages to add in enough new mechanics that the ebb and flow of the gameplay feels different enough while maintaining that good old Frostpunk vibe.

Finding and managing settlements as the main way to obtain resources definitely changes the feel of the game.

Overall, On the Edge is another great addition to Frostpunk and the management sim genre. Trying your best to manage relations with multiple outposts definitely changes up the game play and adds to the already high level of tension from having to make difficult choices. The game does punish mistakes pretty harshly but it’s fairly forgiving in that you almost always know why you failed and can easily improve on your next run.
