Summer in Mara is a role playing farming simulator taking place on a series of tropical islands. You take on the role of Koa, a young girl who was rescued from a shipwreck as a baby by a kindly grandmother, Yaya Haku.

As time passes, it seems like Yaya Haku has passed, leaving Koa to take on the responsibilities of taking care of the island she grew up on, as well as going forth on adventures to see what the oceans of Mara have to offer.

I’m growing corn!

The game’s foundation is a very solid farming sim. You do standard tasks such as clearing and tilling the land, planting and watering a variety of crops, and collecting resources such as minerals and lumber.

You get to travel the seas of Mara on your handy boat, with the trusty Napopo navigating.

In addition to this, you get to explore different islands by traveling on your boat and meet a wide cast of colorful characters. Your adventure starts by meeting Napopo, a shy character who communicates by drawing. Napopo ends up being your navigator and new resident on your island. Everything is wholesome and adorable. As you progress in the main story, you unlock many side quests from the characters you run into.

There is a heavy emphasis on role playing and exploration that the demo was unable to convey. It’s great, also Caleb says no a lot.

While there is a heavy emphasis on role playing and exploration, the foundation is still on the farming mechanics as completing the quests often rely on managing your farm well. The two elements go hand in hand and help to break the tedium and monotony if it had relied only on the farming mechanics.

Overall Summer in Mara is shaping up to be a very solid role playing farming sim with the exploration elements providing something new to look forward to as the players progress in the game.
