Evan’s Remain is a pleasant combination of platformer puzzler and a visual novel. The core game play mechanic revolves around solving deceptively simple levels interspersed with narrative elements delivered through a visual novel presentation with charming sprite based graphics, backed by a competent score.

The game features charming 2D sprite based graphics to deliver the narrative.

The game starts you off as a young girl named Dysis, going undercover to track down Evan, an elusive genius gone missing. A recent letter from Evan has mysteriously turned up, revealing his whereabouts on an equally mysterious island full of ancient technology.

The main goal is to jump over the green monolith at the end of the level.

In order to progress, you need to clear each level by jumping over the end obstacle. You have regular platforms that disappear once you touch them and jump off, switch platforms that toggle their states from active to inactive and vice versa, teleport blocks, and blocks that reposition other blocks or change their type. The puzzles look deceptively simple but are challenging enough without being frustrating.

The narrative plays out like a visual novel. Be prepared to do a lot of reading.

In between the puzzle solving, the narrative plays out in visual novel form. The story starts off with some mystery, and ends with many twists and turns. While the puzzles where charming enough, the narrative really engaged me as I was eager to find out what happened next. Personally speaking, the ending evoked a gamut of emotions, and I was left pondering a few things even many hours after I finished the game.

The narrative uses flash backs to add to the mystery.

I was able to beat the game in about three hours and it was the perfect amount. It left me wanting a little bit more without overstaying its welcome. Overall, Evan’s Remains took me pleasantly by surprise, especially the narrative. Fans of puzzle games and visual novels have a very solid title to look forward to.
