Reddit user snowolf_ (https://www.reddit.com/user/snowolf_/) has compiled the Sonic Mania decompilation from Rubberduckycooly (https://github.com/Rubberduckycooly/Sonic-Mania-Decompilation) for the Miyoo Mini/Plus and thanks to the Onion OS team we can now play it on our handhelds!

Installing Onion OS

You’ll need to install Onion OS onto your Miyoo Mini. I’ll briefly go over this step since I do it in almost every guide I make.

Download the latest version of Onion OS from the official github: https://onionui.github.io/

Extract the contents using a program like 7-Zip: https://www.7-zip.org/

If your microSD card is not formated to FAT32, use a tool like rufus or guiformat to do so. If you are updating Onion OS, there is no need to format.
Formatting means all data will be erased! Back up anything you want to keep before formatting!
rufus: https://rufus.ie/en/
guiformat: http://ridgecrop.co.uk/guiformat.htm

If you don’t want to use rufus or guiformat, you can use Onion Desktop Tools: https://github.com/schmurtzm/Onion-Desktop-Tools

This tool was made by one of the developers of Onion OS and will take care of installation for you. As always, if you don’t trust third party software use a virtual machine.

Copy over the Onion OS files to the root of your microSD card and insert it back into your Miyoo Mini and turn it on to finish the installation.

Troubleshooting

If you are having problems installing or updating, you may need to update the firmware, format the microSD card and try again, or use another microSD card.

If you want to try updating the firmware, it can be obtained from Miyoo’s official website: https://www.lomiyoo.com/en/gujianxiazai.html

The website will give you a security warning. I did not do a security analysis on it so I cannot vouch for its safety. The firmware will be a single .img file. Copy this file to the root of your microSD and plug in a charging cable while the Miyoo is turned off. It should update the firmware.

Installing Ports Collection

Once you’re on your handheld, we’ll need to install the ports app. To do this, go to the Package Manager in the Apps folder, scroll all the way down to Ports Collection, enable it, and press Start twice to install and exit.

Installing Sonic Mania Port

We’ll need two files, the Sonic Mania port files, and the Data.rsdk from a Sonic Mania installation.

Sonic Mania Port Files: https://github.com/OnionUI/Ports-Collection/releases/tag/v1.1.0

There’s a nice collection of ports here. If you like action platformers, I highly recommend Cave Story.

For the Data.rsdk file, you need to grab it from either your Steam installation or your Epic Games installation.

For Steam, you can go to the installation directory by clicking on properties after right clicking on a game name. From there click on the “Installed Files” tab and click on the “Browse…” button.

For Epic Games, you can go to the installation directory by clicking on the “…” button next to the game name and click on the folder icon in the “Installation” field.

Extract the contents of the sonic mania port files using a program like 7-Zip. Copy the Data.rsdk file into the Sonic Mania port directory in the Roms\PORTS\Games\Sonic Mania folder.

Copy the entire Roms folder into the root of your microSD card.

Safely eject the card from your PC and insert it back into your Miyoo Mini. Once you turn it on, navigate to the ports app in the games folders. Start ports.

Once you start it, the screen will be empty at first. Select the ~Import ports option and let it finish the import process. Now the games will show up. Sonic Mania is located in the Platform folder.

The first time you start ports, you will have to import them. If you don't see this screen, uninstall and then re-install the Ports Collection in Package Manager.

Now you can start playing!

Changing the Aspect Ratio

The game is in a widescreen aspect ratio which isn’t ideal. You have two options if you don’t like widescreen. You can press Select + R1 to stretch it to full screen or you can crop it to a 4:3 aspect ratio by tweaking the settings.ini file. The game looks much better cropped but the tradeoff is that parts of the UI will be cutoff and some details on the side will be lost. This video by BenjaMoose goes over it in better detail.

Apparently the method of forcing a native 4:3 aspect ratio no longer works as of now so we’ll either have to play with the original widescreen, stretched full screen, or cropped 4:3.

To crop it, we’ll edit the settings.ini file located in SD:\Roms\PORTS\Games\Sonic Mania. Before you make any changes, I would make a back up of the settings.ini file by copying it and pasting it. You can rename the backup file if you want. Reddit user -Mahn (https://www.reddit.com/user/-Mahn/) has recommend to make the following edits:

winWidth=352
maxPixWidth=352
pixWidth=352

winWidth and maxPixWidth are edited and you can add the pixWidth entry underneath maxPixWidth. The width of 352 pixels is the setting recommended by snowolf_ to get as close to a 4:3 ratio without breaking anything.

Conclusion

The port works pretty well! The cropped aspect ratio felt like the best way to play in my opinion. It looked the best while not making too many sacrifices in playability. I did notice the battery draining much faster while playing Sonic Mania however.

Anyways that’s going to be it. If you guys need any more help, please feel free to leave a comment. Also check out the rest of the ports! Thanks to snowolf_, the Onion OS team, and all those hard working wizards out there for giving us these ports to play on the Miyoo Mini Plus. It’s the one handheld that keeps surprising me with how much it can do given its limited hardware.
