I scrub the SBCGaming subreddit daily and I saw this neat looking handheld pop up in a few posts. Introducing the Small Universe x Sugar Cube.
It boasts a 3.9″ OLED display and a premium build. If a company can produce a premium vertical handheld to compete with the Analogue Pocket, that’s great news. There is also the strange gimmick of the screen being rotatable. Now this would make sense if it were a 16:9 display but this is a 10:9 display. You are basically rotating a square and the use cases for this seem pretty questionable.
In addition to the screen, the circular D-pad and oddly shaped control buttons seem less than ideal in terms of ergonomics.
That said, super sleuth JONxJITSU on Reddit has observed that the company’s promo page for the Small Universe x Sugar Cube showed the only product they have seemingly produced thus far, a Surface Duo cover. This doesn’t bode much for confidence.
The user has also pointed out another vaporware console, the OH WOW, which over promised and delivered no physical product.
While all signs point to the Small Universe x Sugar Cube being vaporware, only time can truly tell. I’ll take a wait and see approach but to be honest I am not expecting anything to come out.
